“The Outside Inn”

6 Bed Dorm

The Outside Inn is a ground floor, six bed dorm room with custom designed bunk beds. Each bed has its own personal power point and reading light. There is secure storage to keep your belongings safe and Wifi is available for free. Bed linen is provided and the beds are pre-made.

The room was created by the fabulous Precious Collective, as a cabinet of curiosities. The door opens to reveal a saturated room of coloured landscapes and shiny lacquered local birds, overlooked by a ceiling that meets the sky. It truly is a place to bring the outside in…

Precious’ output is an amalgamation of each members’ cheeky side. Creating juicy works with layers of glossy paint, plush textiles, and everything in between, they manage to create a humorous world with no rules, a tactile landscape of colour and texture.

The room houses intricate handmade curiosities such as inlaid votive paintings, bumpy wall reliefs and ‘trompe l’oeil’ furniture. Think theatre and Dr.Seuss meets luxurious mansion, meets the need to decorate. This encompasses walls, ceiling and floor, with an emphasis on celebrating the beautiful architrave and skirting of this historic building. A descent into colour and texture, both real and imaginary.

Emma Bentley-Fox

The Honeymoon Suite is a private twin room, with two single beds and a private ensuite shower room. Located on the first floor with a rear facing window overlooking the courtyard, the suite provides privacy, peace and quiet.

Wifi is available for free and linen and towels are provided, with the beds pre-made with soft cosy bedding.

Leeds based artist Emma Bentley Fox has used this room to create a warm, nostalgic and hopeful space. Wanting to avoid using clichés around heteronormative romantic narratives, she is interested in representing co-dependency, independence, platonic love, and queer relationships, with nods and allusions to queer culture and tokens of ‘broken’ relationships, that our visitors might recognise and see themselves reflected in.

Her use of second hand items and personal and found artefacts asks the question ‘what can objects tell us about their owners?’.

Emma also explores the queering/subversion of ‘kitsch’ items and imagery, questioning specifically typically ‘British’ taste and class. She uses preloved items, items often considered as ‘trashy’ to create a space and artefacts, that is – in some ways – considered ‘tasteful’. Emma has used a range of materials, texture and colours to create a sensory experience so that the room may be experienced and enjoyed in more ways than one.

“Ocean Galaxy”

Private Double Room

Ocean Galaxy is a private double room with en suite shower facilities, and a lovely side view of the church & beyond, situated on the first floor of the Art Hostel. Wifi is available for free, and linen and towels are provided with the bed pre-made with soft cosy bedding.

Designed by international award-winning photographic artist Mandy Barker, the room is based around a galaxy of suspended footballs, giving the impression that the guests themselves are part of a unique solar system. The footballs are in fact marine plastic pollution, a total of 992 marine debris balls recovered from the world’s oceans in just 4 months. 769 footballs from 41 different countries and islands and from 144 different beaches, by 89 members of the public.

Surrounding walls of the room show collections from Europe, the United Kingdom, and a recovery of 228 balls by one person. Laying in bed looking at the ceiling reveals the global collaboration of over 769 footballs collected by the world’s public.

In addition a never-seen-before framed print of a marine debris Leeds United football shirt (replica 1978) found washed up on the East Coast of the UK in 2015, hangs on the wall, along with a specially created Guest Book that reveals the artist’s images and notes created during the process of the series.

The FIFA World Cup was the catalyst for the creation of this project to be able to raise awareness during an international sporting event. PENALTY is the name of the series with the double meaning; PENALTY is a punishment for breaking a rule in the game of football, and in relation to this project, a PENALTY is the price we will all pay if we do not look after our oceans by managing the over consumption of plastic and becoming responsible for its disposal.

Mandy Barker is an International award-winning photographic artist whose work involving marine plastic debris over the past 10 years has received global recognition.

Each bed has its own personal power point and reading light. There is also secure storage to keep your belongings safe free Wifi. Bed linen is provided on pre-made beds. Shared shower and toilet facilities are available on the same floor.

The Common(ing) was created and built by artist collective Sarah Li, Edwin Li and Lady Kitt as a shrine dedicated to “togetherness”, a place to enjoy and share acts of commoning. Created in celebration of our communities ‘round the corner and ‘round the world, this room is an invitation for travellers to leave something for future visitors and to take something away, creating a physical, audio, emotional and conceptual circular economy which encourages recycling, reusing and honouring.

There is a long, rich and beautiful history of travellers creating and visiting shrines. These can be destinations in their own right, or stopping places of safety and reflection along the way. Sarah, Edwin and Kitt have taken elements of this tradition and woven them through the practical functions of a bedroom, creating a space that is useful, interesting, restful and thought-teasing.

The Wooly Ewe is a six-bed dorm. Each bed has its own personal power point and reading light. There is also secure storage to keep your belongings safe, as well as free Wifi. Bed linen is provided on pre-made beds. Shared shower and toilet facilities are available on the same floor.

The Wooly Ewe was created by designer and installation artist Jesse Paul Wright. It is a highly considered living space; comfortable, cosy, functional and quirky. 380 woollen tiles are woven to the ceiling, repurposing garments found on local streets. Copper walls nod to local industry, while bright blue teals sampled from copper patina frame the ornate windows. A row of tiny sheep in pride colours sit on little shelves. Wool gathered from nearby fields, hand dyed and installed in old found drawers sit at the end of a bed. A portrait of a Ewe made from woollen scraps hangs by the doorway.

Jesse wanted to inspire others to see value in old textiles whilst acknowledging Leeds’ industrial woollen history. The ingenuity of mankind to process natural fibres into cloth is amazing, and the room is also a celebration of the sheep and our ongoing relationship with nature.

“Snowstorm collection” by Nelson & Woodward

Private Double

Snowstorm Collection is a private double with en suite shower room on the second floor.

With views of the church & beyond, this cozy room will provide a restful stay on the quieter second floor of the Art Hostel. The double bed is made up with comfy bedding & linen, and towels are provided as well as free wifi.

Nelson & Woodward, an artist duo based in Sheffield, have created this room for sponsors Mick Ward & Gill Crawshaw, focusing on their collection of snowglobes from around the world.

Mick & Gill’s collection celebrates their travels together; their first collection as a couple. For Nelson & Woodward,  it is a collection that stands as a celebration of a potentially short period in history when travel was reasonably accessible and cheap. Although the internet now enables us to scour online for objects located all over the world, for many such as Gill and Mick the fun is in the discovering of the object in person, the joy of seeking and finding. The collection is testament to the lasting attraction of a souvenir small enough to fit in a suitcase and charming enough to look great on the mantelpiece.

As times change so do our concerns and the conversations we have as a society. Similar to many collections formed on Grand Tours, this snowstorm collection now also highlights other narratives; The mass production of objects predominantly produced in china then shipped across the globe and the impacts on global warming of people moving on mass via air travel.

With environmental concerns, the UK leaving the EU, and global pandemics we have already seen a shift in travel habits. It feels like this snowstorm collection represents a more carefree age when we could all aspire to travel internationally collecting experiences, stories and souvenirs along the way. Travel has undoubtedly become more precious, but what of collecting? We will have to look towards galleries, museums, social media, and the mantlepiece at home to see how collecting changes it’s habits.

The work of artist duo Annie Nelson and Chris Woodward strives to offer alternatives to a fast paced society, interrogating our perpetual desire for quick fixes and fast solutions.

“The Rainbow Room”

ViDa are nomadic artists, travelling between schools, festivals & theatres, creating, collaborating and sharing all they have to offer in the fields of Visual Arts and Dance.
Combining the ergonomics of dance & movement with the detailed design and refined construction skills of visual art and sculpture, ViDa aim to create work that is accessible, engaging and fun.

We were motivated by wanting to keep within the circular economy of the local communities and to use as much reclaimed material as possible. We knew that we wanted the sleeping situation to be the starting point for the design for the room, with the focus point being the Sleeping Pods. To us, ‘Pods’ have futuristic connotations but we wanted to create something that had the same highly efficient functionality but could have been built on your allotment.

Using responsibly sourced timber, a solid structure was built that was space efficient and respected the existing architecture of the room. We allowed our process to be informed by the materials that we could source for free or that people in the local community no longer wanted
