About the Kirkgate Hostel

In 2016, East Street Arts transformed a derelict three storey building on Leeds’ oldest street, Kirkgate, into a quirky and unique home for touring artists and visitors to the city. Inspired by our experiences of Europe, where the unique characteristics that artists and performers bring to a place are welcomed and celebrated.

With eight fantastic bespoke rooms created by artists and sponsored by generous organisations and individuals, the Kirkgate hostel was open for business for two and a half years. During its operation, the hostel hosted more than 10,000 guests from more than 115 countries.

Take a look at some of the Kirkgate rooms below and meet the artists who created them:

Had a fantastic stay the night before the Leeds half-marathon. Wish I could’ve stayed longer! Thanks for the great service & good vibes.

Very friendly staff. The best of what a youth hostel can be. The atmosphere really sets this apart. Fantastic location for a Bonobo concert at the O2. Beds very comfy and firm. Room stylish – much better than stucco hotel rooms. Foyer very comfortable and warm with lots a artsy books to mull over your breakfast and board games for a rainy day. Shared bathroom was immaculate with a fantastic shower.

Great little gem hidden just enough to miss the noise but close enough to walk to town. Really great rooms, clean facilities and such friendly staff! Really worth its money, will definitely stay with this hostel again!
