The Wooly Ewe was created by designer and installation artist Jesse Paul Wright. It is a highly considered living space; comfortable, cosy, functional and quirky. 380 woollen tiles are woven to the ceiling, repurposing garments found on local streets. Copper walls nod to local industry, while bright blue teals sampled from copper patina frame the ornate windows. A row of tiny sheep in pride colours sit on little shelves. Wool gathered from nearby fields, hand dyed and installed in old found drawers sit at the end of a bed. A portrait of a Ewe made from woollen scraps hangs by the doorway.
Jesse wanted to inspire others to see value in old textiles whilst acknowledging Leeds’ industrial woollen history. The ingenuity of mankind to process natural fibres into cloth is amazing, and the room is also a celebration of the sheep and our ongoing relationship with nature.
